Moving the Sage ACT Index files from the C Drive

On a lot of Servers hosting ACT, the database lives on a different drive than C.  This is because C drives are typically kept smaller.  However, SQL likes to store things on the C Drive even if you load the database on a different drive.  Included in this are the index files that are generated to provide a method to perform the Universal Search that started in Version 2012 of ACT.  It is possible to move these files to a larger drive.  Here's how.  Follow the directions exactly for the correct version of ACT you are running.  The information below came from the ACT Knowledgebase item  numbered 28454.

Sage ACT! 2012 (V14)

  • Close Sage ACT!
  • Through Windows® Services, stop ACT! Service Host and ACT! Smart Task Service Host
  • Delete existing Indices folder
  • Default location:
    • Windows® XP, Windows Server® 2003: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ACT\ACT Data\Indices
    • Windows Vista®, Windows® 7, Windows Server 2008: C:\ProgramData\Act\ACT Data\Indices
  • Locate the Act.Server.Host.exe.config file within the Sage ACT! installation folder
  • Default location:
    • 32-bit Operating system: C:\Program Files\Act\Act for Windows
    • 64-bit Operating system: C:\Program Files (x86)\Act\Act for Windows
  • Right click on file, select Open With, select Notepad
  • Locate the section configSections:
  • Remove the beginning and ending comment characters
  • Update baseIndexFolder to desired location (Example: D:\ACTIndex Files)
  • Save changes, close file
  • Through Windows Services, start ACT! Service Host and ACT! Smart Task Service Host
  • Opening the database will trigger the creation of the new Indices folder in the designated location

Sage ACT! 2013 (V15.0)

  • Close Sage ACT!
  • Through Windows® Services, stop ACT! Service Host and ACT! Smart Task Service Host
  • Delete existing Indices folder.
  • Default location:
    • Windows® XP, Windows Server® 2003: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ACT\ACT Data\Indices
    • Windows Vista®, Windows® 7, Windows Server 2008: C:\ProgramData\Act\ACT Data\Indices
  • Locate the Act.Server.Host.exe.config file within the Sage ACT! installation folder
  • Default location:
    • 32-bit Operating system: C:\Program Files\Act\Act for Windows
    • 64-bit Operating system: C:\Program Files (x86)\Act\Act for Windows
  • Right click on file, select Open With, select Notepad
  • Locate line: "<searchSettings databaseIndexBatchSize="20"/>"
  • Update the line to read: "<searchSettings databaseIndexBatchSize="20" baseIndexFolder="."/>"
  • Update baseIndexFolder to desired location (Example: baseIndexFolder="D:\ACTIndex Files")
  • Save changes, close file
  • Through Windows Services, start ACT! Service Host and ACT! Smart Task Service Host
  • Opening the database will trigger the creation of the new Indices folder in the designated location

Sage ACT! 2013 Service Pack 1 (V15.1)

  • Close Sage ACT!
  • Through Windows® Services, stop ACT! Service Host and ACT! Smart Task Service Host
  • Delete existing Indices folder. Default location:
    • Windows® XP, Windows Server® 2003: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ACT\ACT Data\Indices
    • Windows Vista®, Windows® 7, Windows Server 2008: C:\ProgramData\Act\ACT Data\Indices
  • Locate the Act.Server.Host.exe.config file within the Sage ACT! installation folder
  • Default location:
    • 32-bit Operating system: C:\Program Files\Act\Act for Windows
    • 64-bit Operating system: C:\Program Files (x86)\Act\Act for Windows
  • Right click on file, select Open With, select Notepad
  • Locate line: "<baseIndexFolder="."/>"
  • Update baseIndexFolder to desired location (Example: baseIndexFolder="D:\ACTIndex Files")
  • Save changes, close file
  • Through Windows Services, start ACT! Service Host and ACT! Smart Task Service Host
